Garni

The temple was erected on the grounds of the dilapidated fortress of Garni, built in 2-3rd centuries B.C. and used as the summer residence of Armenian kings. Fortified with fourteen towers and powerful defences, the Garni fortress was well known of its royal baths. The multicoloured mosaic pavement of the bathrooms depicting the sea and various mythological Gods, is of singular value. All the buildings were preserved until 1679 - the severe earthquake. The restored pagan temple is a splendid example of ancient architecture. At one time, a great complex of palaces and temples, aiming to serve and defend Armenian kings stood here.
