Tehran's Azadi Tower was designed by a young Iranian architect, Hussein Amanat,
whose plan was selected in a national competition. Tehran is not a beautiful
capital city, nor is it an ugly one. The city, with a population of 12,000,000
proliferates northward into the gray foothills of the Alborz Mountain at
an annual growth rate of six percent. Tehran has few moods, but is probably
best enjoyed on a late summer evening by walking up one of its north-south
avenues lined with plane trees and cooled by narrow channels of rushing water. |
